“MOON TIDES” – The Women Divers of Korea
An upcoming event at the International Museum of Women in San Francisco will feature photojournalist Brenda Paik Sunoo, speaking about her new book “Moon Tides”:
“Brenda Paik Sunoo’s Moon Tides: Jeju Island Grannies of the Sea is an homage to the haenyeo-the elderly women divers who range in age from 39 to 93 years old who live on Jeju Island, Korea. Through photographs and interviews, Moon Tides introduces the reader to these extraordinary women in their own voices and in their own environments.“
The women divers of Jeju Island (known as haenyeo) are unique and rare workers. For centuries, they have harvested seaweed and shellfish at depths of 20 meters, holding their breath for as long as two minutes without any equipment other than their rubber suits, masks and nets. The Korean women divers of Jeju Island have faced the tempestuous tides of history and struggle for economic survival. Their intimate relationship to the land and sea, their shaman beliefs, and their communal village life have kept them protected from modern pressures. In return, many of the haenyeo live a life of purpose and resilience well into their 90s. They illuminate a steady, fearless course and most of all, an enduring legacy.
“With a compassionate eye and a generous heart, Brenda Paik Sunoo has beautifully captured the fascinating, dwindling world of the haenyeo. I am grateful she has given voice to these ‘grannies of the sea’ and their powerful, moving stories. Dive into this book and prepare to be amazed.”
Event details: Wednesday, June 29 from 5:30 to 7:30p.m., at the International Museum of Women, the Russ Building, 235 Montgomery St., 12th Floor, San Francisco, CA.
