Shell’s “Gannet Alpha” Oil Rig
Shell, the oil giant with plans to drill in the Arctic ocean off the coast of Alaska next year, revealed last Friday that approximately 1,500 barrels of oil had leaked from its “Gannet Alpha” oil well in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland. The spill is the worst in British waters in more than a decade.
Shell waited two days to issue public statements about the 54,600 gallon crude oil leak, and there has been a near total news blackout about the incident in UK news media.
An oil sheen now covers more than 26 square kilometers of waters off the Scottish coast.
